When you invest in a piece of gemstone jewelry, it’s rarely just about how it looks.
It might mark a season of your life. A personal shift. A reminder of something important. Or maybe you simply love how it feels when you wear it.
Either way, you want it to last.
The good news is that with a little care and awareness, your gemstone bracelets and mala necklaces can stay beautiful and strong for many years. Here are a few simple ways to protect the pieces you love.
1. Be Gentle with Stretch Bracelets
Stretch bracelets are comfortable and easy to wear, which is why so many people love them. But the stretch cord inside them does need mindful handling.
A few simple habits make a big difference:
- Roll the bracelet onto your wrist instead of pulling it wide and stretching it.
- Avoid repeatedly snapping it on and off.
- Keep it away from sharp edges that could nick the cord.
Stretch cord naturally relaxes over time. That doesn’t mean it’s failing. It just means it’s been loved and worn. If it starts to feel loose, that’s usually a sign it may be time for restringing rather than replacement.
2. Know When to Take Your Jewelry Off
Gemstones are strong, but they’re not indestructible.
It’s best to remove your jewelry when:
- Showering or swimming
- Using cleaning products
- Applying lotions, perfumes, or hairspray
- Doing heavy lifting or yard work
Water, chemicals, and impact can weaken cord, dull stones, or damage metal components over time.
Taking your jewelry off during these activities isn’t about being precious. It’s about protecting something meaningful so you can keep wearing it longer.
3. Store It with Care
How you store your jewelry matters more than most people realize.
A few simple storage tips:
- Keep pieces in a soft pouch or jewelry box when not in use.
- Avoid tossing multiple pieces together where they can rub and scratch.
- Store in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
If you receive your jewelry in a linen pouch or box, that packaging isn’t just for gifting. It’s meant to help protect your piece when it’s not being worn.
4. Understanding Wear, Breakage, and Meaning
All jewelry shows signs of wear over time. That’s natural.
Stretch bracelets may loosen. Metal components may dull slightly. Tassels may soften. These are signs of life, not failure.
Mala necklaces are a little different.
Because malas are traditionally hand-knotted between each bead, they are both strong and intentionally constructed. If a mala breaks, it is often due to significant tension, long-term wear, or the cord naturally weakening over time.
In many spiritual traditions, when a mala breaks, it is seen as symbolic. Some believe it means the intention connected to that mala has been fulfilled. Others see it as the closing of a chapter or the completion of a cycle.
Rather than something to fear, it can be viewed as a moment of transition.
5. What Happens If a Mala Breaks?
Unlike a stretch bracelet, a mala necklace cannot simply be restrung in a quick repair.
Each bead is individually knotted. To repair one properly, it would need to be completely dismantled and re-knotted bead by bead. This process takes time and care, much like creating it from the beginning.
Because of that, mala repairs are essentially a full rebuild and typically cost between $40–$50.
Some people choose to have their mala restrung. Others choose to repurpose the beads into something new, such as a bracelet, a smaller piece, or even keeping a few stones as a reminder of the chapter that piece represented.
There is no wrong choice. Follow your intuition for what you'd like to do with the stones.
6. My Philosophy on Longevity
I believe jewelry should be worn and lived in.
Stretch bracelets can often be refreshed and restrung when needed. That is a simple and practical way to extend their life.
Malas, however, carry both craftsmanship and symbolism. If one breaks, you can choose whether it’s time for renewal or time for transformation.
Either way, the materials themselves are not wasted. Gemstones are durable, natural elements that can continue to serve you in new forms.

A Final Thought
Caring for gemstone jewelry isn’t complicated. It’s simply about awareness.
Roll, don’t stretch.
Remove it during rough activities or when bathing, swimming, or washing dishes (basically whenever the jewelry may be submerged in water).
Store it gently.
